Gloves & Books & Pretty Things

Today I put on some classical music, and dove into treasures.

Gloves and books 10

If we were attending a real mad tea, and had to meet up in big hats and such, what ever would you wear?

I got out a few gloves.

I still have so much of my stuff in boxes from years ago, when I moved to the country house full time.

Isn't that appalling?

But I do have a few pretties at the ready.

Gloves and books 4

Then I re-found my antique, supple as babies skin, white leather gloves.

Gloves and books 3

We tried on bonnets and lace.

Gloves and books 12

Some books for good measure.

Gloves and books 15

Even the little bear is excited to dress up for tea.

I so love that bear.

Mister Lovee gave her to me on one of our first road trip dates.

She opted for a mask today.

Gloves and books 13

Where ever would I go in these gloves today I ask?

They are so much fun to put on.

Gloves and books 2

As I collect bits and bobs.

Gloves and books 8

Mending this and that.

Gloves and books 6

Boys napping under toadstools.

Gloves and books 14

Playing with jewels.

I am so obsessed with scale stands that you can find and estate shops, missing the scales.

Mainly because if they are missing the scales and crystals I use them to hang all sorts of things on.

I used one here, to hang keys and teacups from.

Wonderland tea and key contraption

I needed a fun centerpiece so I threw it together on a whim.

Mostly I heap necklaces on them.

Or, I use the spots where crystals should hang for earrings.

I buy one every time I see them, so I have a little collection.

They are so darn handy I tell ya.

Gloves and books 5

Miss Witchie is soooo excited.

My sister is afraid of her.

She says every scary movie begins with a doll as such.

But I trust Witch.

Although, I do chase my sister around holding her and cackling.

But honestly, she is a dear.

Harmless little Witchcake.

I do sound certifiably mad don't I?

Well, we all need a little madness in our lives from time to time, me thinks.

Gloves and books 7

I changed up the paper dress I made, more to suit my style.

The more jewels and flowers, the merrier, I say 😉

Tales of making her here.

Gloves and books 11

I collect bee pins and brooches, so I used some of my favorite jade bees.

Gloves and books 16

Of course, no day of baubles and frocks is complete without a drift through stacks of books.

A few years ago I was gifted this Beatrix Potter book.

It's delightful.

I do enjoy it so.

It's a treat, and quite amusing.

Even for a girl who prefers old books, it's lovely all the same.

Filled with old letters and details that are wonderful to look at.

Gloves and books 17

This is what the overview at Barnes and Noble says about the book…

"This lavish, illustrated journal describes Beatrix Potter's life as a young woman in Victorian England as she struggles to achieve independence and to find artistic success and romantic love. Using witty, observant commentary taken from Beatrix's own diaries, the journal features a wealth of watercolor paintings, sketches, photographs, letters and period memorabilia to recreate the world in which she lived."

The book is especially fun because letters open up, and photo books open up inside the main book.

Very interactive.

Gloves and books 21

I have had it for years and still enjoy it, finding new little tid-bits here and there.

(never mind my nail polish, I picked it off from overwhelmingness watching an intense movie)

Gloves and books 18

Why it inspires my tea party mood, I don't know?

But it does.

Gloves and books 19

The overall feel of magic I suppose?

Gloves and books 22

Beatrix and her Benjamin!

Gloves and books 20

Ahh, dream times.

Love them so.

Gloves and books 9

I am excited for the mad tea party, are you?

It's quite hot here.

You would melt if you are not a heat lover.

But it's dry heat, zero humidity until monsoon season.

Last night it was very cool at 9 p.m., surprisingly.

We sat outside and it was delightful.

My sister and I used her Ipad app for looking at constellations.

It was fascinating.

You point your Ipad at the sky and it shows you what you are looking at.

The stars are so big and clear here it's amazing really.

I am always amazed by those stars up there.

And it's easy to spot things like the big and little dipper.

But seeing all the others because of the app was awesome.

My extra plump garden rat, Ratty, is terrorizing my garden still.

I think he needs a little suit.

If I capture him, it's dress up times, so he best pack his suitcase and move on.

🙂

Love, V

Sparkly heart

ps:  There are so many bird babies in my garden.

Two big baby hawks were learning to fly this morning.

They were all chatter until their huge mom scurried them back up into a massive tree across the wash way out back.

Quail babies shuffle along with their parents and auntie all day.

So quickly that I can't even focus fast enough to photograph them.

There were about 10 babies to begin, and now there are two.

The remaining two are growing so fast.

I love how they stick together.

The male is the smaller one with markings on his face.

The females are larger with solid dark faces.

So I am sure it is mom, dad, auntie and two kids.

They live in a small wood pile behind the veggie garden.

So sweet!

  1. Truly lovely! 🙂 Have a wonderful and magical weekend!

  2. Lisa Swifka says:

When I looked at that scale with the earrings hanging from it I thought…hey, wait….it is the same exact one I found at my fave (now closed) consignment store that we made in to a lamp. I hung chandie crystals from the leaves where you have earrings. I am always on the look out for things like that!!
Everything seems to be coming along in prep for the big TEA soiree. I am still hoping I can get my act together for it!
    XOXOXOXO

  3. They are so super handy for anything aren’t they? I found my first one when I was in college, but it had red crystals, which I still have and love. I took them off and piled on the jewels and man oh man, they do come in handy as jewelry holders.
It’s amazing the things you can make out of things, hahaha!!
    xoxo

  4. Thank you lovely Maria, have a superb weekend!! <3

  5. Queenie says:

Quails with babies!! Squeal!!!!! They are the cutest ever! I love the little clucking chirping noise they make, what fun!
    Have a wonderful weekend.
    Always, Queenie

  7. Chris Porter says:

What a lovely post! Wish I could come over to play. Have a lovely weekend. Chris x

  8. Such a great idea for those scale stands, Vanessa! They make for a wonderful and whimsical centerpiece. The Beatrix Potter book looks very interesting. I think I might like it myself so I’ll be checking it out next time I visit Barnes and Noble. Love your gloves. They do look so soft.
P.S. Picked a winner for your print giveaway. I have just done a post and notified her for a mailing address and choice of print. I hope to have that to you over the weekend sometime. : )

  9. Annalee says:

What a fun idea for those scales! And those quail babies are just the cutest. ^-^
    Planning Tea Party madness still… I can’t wait! =D
I hope you have a lovely weekend!
    XOXO

  10. Thank You for the delight 🙂

  11. Cori G. says:

Why me thinks you’ve gone round the bend, but then all the best ones do…or something like that. Today I was in San Diego and I saw the most delightful little woodland fary home that reminded me of you. It was so so sweet!! Some of the little Faries looked like you witchycakes with the same magical twinkle in their eyes.
    Xoxo,
    Coricakes

  12. Miss Linda says:

Oh, it is all so amazing.

  13. I’m on tea-party madness mode, too. I love it though. Gives me an excuse to drown myself in finery, china/teacups and whatnot. The antique gloves I own are white cotton and they are so pristine, I’m afraid to wear them anywhere. Even though I keep a clean house, I am NOT a pristine kind of gal. Not at all. Hahaha.
Additional note, I grew up on 40 acres in the country and we had wild quail too and these birds called Whipporwill. They had the prettiest call.

    Dearest Dear Vanessa,
So many lovely things to inspire you as you prepare for The Mad Tea Party!! I have that Beatrix Potter book too and I must agree with you! It is so magical and inspirational! Have you seen another book by the same publisher, done in the same interactive format called “Fairyopolis”, based on the works of Cicely Mary Barker? I got one for my Mommy when she broke her foot a few years ago and needed to be distracted! It lives in my library now and I have fun looking at it on occasion. In fact, I got both of these lovely books out tonight and looked at them again, so thank you for the reminder!
Can’t wait to see what you are cooking up!!!
    Hugs,
    Betty

All of your posts are so magical, I get all caught up in them and find myself in other places…Mr.Sweet keeps asking me, “WHERE are you now..”..in MAGIC LAND, I say.
You MUST have written a book at some time or another…you are such a talented soul…and I am so glad I found your delightful self. 🙂

Loving the Quail picture Vanessa. The quail here haven’t had any babies this year and I MISS watching the little babies zip around the neighborhood. How’s the hummingbird mamma doing?
I really like your interesting Beatrix Potter book. I will definitely be looking out for one.
I’ve been pondering over your mad tea and have been pulling out stuff and writing down ideas! You keep us inspired with all your amazing trinkets and lovely garden!<3

  22. Donna says:

I used to go to the Opera and that is one place I would definitely wear those beautiful leather gloves! Also, I adore those Victorian scales – I had one and it fell off a shelf (among other things) during a small earthquake here (in VA of all places!!) and literally shattered. I was heartbroken.
I giggled about the nail polish – I do the same thing! Most of the time I don’t even realize I am doing it. =) Much of the time my polished nails are also covered in paint from my art room and/or wrecked from work in the garden (I hate wearing garden gloves – I love to feel the dirt and plants in my hands). Prettily manicured nails is not something that last more than 5 minutes for me. =) I still like to try, though.
I love your joyful, magical posts and I’m looking forward to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party!
    Joyfully, Donna

  23. Miss Kelly,
Hummingbird is still here, I Hope she stays safe.
Some mean birds got into another baby bird nest and flew off like flying
    monkey with the babies.
I was so horrified and had nightmares for a week about it.
The mama bird was so frantic I just sobbed. But, hummingbird is
    okay.
So, that is good news!! ;)))

Oh! We have the cutest bee pin for sale at Chantilly right now! I keep wanting to buy it because I love bees, but so far I have shown restraint since I don’t need to be spending money I can’t really spare on unnecessary bee pins.

  25. Kristin says:

I have that Beatrix Potter book, too. It’s one of my favorites because it’s so cozy. I enjoyed it so much I even broke down and got the other one’s, too. (“Wizardology” and “Fairyopolis”). They’re well put together, very inviting books.
