Nature’s magic picked a perfect time to unfurl.
Right before Easter weekend.
Tender breeze scented by jasmine and the last of the orange blossoms.
With a faint note of fresh roses, slowly about to explode.
As you know, I am a hunter of that golden hour.
When 5 p.m. rolls around and sun dances in and out of trees and bushes for an hour.
Casting a changing glow and intensity in the garden.
It moves from bright to dusty, to fairy tale right before the evening hour.
The giant oleander bushes that split my front garden in half, block the last of the fading sun that curiously beams into my east facing flower garden.
It’s that eastern location that is part of what makes my garden possible in the desert.
That and my elevation plus canopying shade trees, all working to shelter flowers from heat and afternoon sun.
But it’s that special late afternoon sun, trickling in through oleander bushes, that gives glowing turns to different flowers in the garden.
Truth be told, it’s the only place I want to be when spring and sun meet up for happiest hour.
And it seems, little winged creatures agree.
He sort of twisted his head a little and looked right at me taking his photo.
I did a count of my rose bushes.
4 were here and are 35+ years old.
And there are 32 now.
Which means somewhere in my madness, I put in 28 rose bushes?!?
What the heck?!
Haha!
I didn’t even notice.
I had never counted.
It just sort of happened over the last 13 years.
Oh and look…
From one day to the next, the mesquite trees got their leaves.
Solidifying the look of spring for certain.
Tea in the garden anyone?
Roses roses everywhere.
32 bushes about to pop open in some sort of unison.
I can’t remember when I put in the metal rose arbor below, 4 or 5 years ago?
Maybe longer, I don’t know.
There are two white climbing roses on either side of the front, and one pink on the back.
Which is finally making its way over.
The pinks are these perfect tiny rose buds the size of your pinky nail.
So pretty and dainty.
Oh, whose that looking at us I wonder?
Why, it’s the keeper of the garden, sitting atop the highest porch stair.
His throne really.
Keeping look out over his kingdom.
Any sound, car, voice and he is on it like the Tasmanian devil.
I don’t think he rests much.
Poor dear, it’s just his nature.
Even while asleep his fur sits straight up, ears perked.
One sound and he’s up in less that a second.
If you try to approach his post, he leaves quickly and in annoyance.
Or if you are a stranger, well, just don’t approach.
Haha!
My gate says beware of dog, the mail gal says in this case, it’s no joke.
My little meanie.
Love him so.
He’s with us by a miracle, guarding his dominion.
Protector of his gardens.
Which funny enough, he always sits in his spot at golden hour also.
When the light shoots rainbows around.
Which really might be fairies flying so fast you only see their sparkle?
I’m sort of beyond smitten with rose season.
Are you?
This below, is on the west side of the garden, where the gyspy wagon lives.
It’s on the other side of the big oleanders that split the flower garden from the gypsy wagon, gallery and my office courtyard.
The climbing roses are gobbling up the building.
Tea roses turned up for the party.
There is even a canopy of roses you can hide in and have lunch or write.
Where the wisteria and the roses intertwine.
But now…
Now it’s time for picking.
And I struggle with picking or just leaving to enjoy.
Well, I’ll pick some for my Easter vase, and go from there.
🙂
As golden hour leaves us, evening blue sets in.
Casting a blue light.
As little creatures settle in.
The tops of the aloes get their last glow, like firecrackers.
And the brilliance of color stands out in layers.
Ranunculus.
Roses.
Dusty.
Then blue.
Then dark.
Then fairy lights.
It’s Easter weekend my friends.
I have guests and fun times in store.
Going to some museums, etc.
How are you?
Got any eggciting weekend plans?
Lots of love, happiest Easter wishes!!
xoxo,
Vanessa

Oh my GOODNESS! Such gorgeous flowers and pictures as usual! Thanks so much for sharing your lovely garden with us less than green thumbers 🙂
Always a pleasure to visit your blog,
Tracy M.
How super lovely, Dearest Vanessa! It will be weeks before we will be enjoying our porch garden once again, but it was in the 60’s here today and so the snow is quickly melting and signs of spring are upon us!!! How lovely it all is where you are!
Sending biggest hugs and wishes for a sweet Easter weekend,
Betty
*Le Sigh* – gorgeous. I’m doing my best to be patient for two Don Juan rose bushes to grow up their arbor and over the top. They are so thin and spindly, so dainty in their growth, that I ache for a day when I get the same results that you’ve achieved. I want roses galore and a garden that makes people feel like walking barefoot, reading a book and drinking cold lemonade (or wine,) writing gypsy poetry (or speaking it) while hidden among lush vines that smell of jasmine and other flora. I also hope to be reflective, quiet, still, and watch birds and butterflies dart through the greenery, while singing their private songs. All of your home is a dream palace and I feel so honored to get a glimpse into your sacred realm.
Oh my goodness, I am smitten. I would love to walk your magic gardens at dusk. I might even risk running into the keeper of the garden…lol What are your favorite roses in the AZ heat? Which ones don’t burn up under the intense sun?
The 5 o’clock hour is one of my favorite times of day also, at this spring time of year, like you said, when the sun has that perfect brightness…so stunning!
The lighting surely did make all of your photos glow with that ethereal light.
Your roses are amazing. The variety of colors is astounding. I am partial to the orange hued roses with the blush of pink on the outer petals.
May you also have a blessed, and glorious, Resurrection, Easter Sunday. The sacrifice of our Savior who begets to us life eternal. Such a blessed gift! ‘The greatest Love is this, when a man lays down his life for his friends.’
We never know if we will be here next week, and that’s okay because we know where we are going.
miles of smiles to you, my dear
Miss Teresa
Oh, how beautiful your garden is. I can imagine the jasmine (in a few months ours will bloom). The redbuds are in bloom here. I love them.
I’ve been stitching some little things for the grand girls 🙂 I had to finish so I could clear away all the bits of fabric and thread that have followed me around the house.
I used your adorable cut outs to put on some plastic eggs earlier. They look adorable. Thank you so much.
I’m cooking for some of the family on Sunday. Have a great visit.
So beautiful! Thank you!
Oh how lovely and peaceful. A great place to meditate, I could sit for hours.
I have been making bracelets with glass beads and hemp. I will post soon.
I’ve had a bout with vertigo. Ended up in the hospital for a few days. I know how you feel.
Things are much better now.
Have a wonderful weekend.
it’s all very beautiful Vanessa.. I’m just in awe of your gardens and the serenity there..I would love to have tea in your garden! Im inspired to try more here in our high desert of 7500 feet. Lovely lovely little bird and sweet, faithful friend guarding the gate! We’ve been watching a pair of Mountain Bluebirds building a nest on our porch.. our cherry tree is thick with blossoms..and there are baby chicks in the laundry room 🙂 Tomorrow we have church and the the kids and grandkids will come for a campfire, whiffle ball and playing music.. Your posts ALWAYS bring life and inspiration. Thank you.. Have a wonderful Easter weekend with your guests and special outings..

AMAZING V <3<3<3, This lovely piece of world you claimed and enhanced with all your many a days of hard work, you have turned into such magical beauty. I love the Madonna and your metal fairy gracing your gardens but mostly love, love to see Matty in his element guarding and keeping watch. He does really seem like a copy of my Miss Trixie you viewed on Instagrm. They have that guarded crazy temperament to there persona and yet, they do, for there chosen, allow a bit of love to be interchanged. God Bless them!!!
So you inspired me again and I treated myself to a rose bush from Loews the other day. It was a markdown but had the most glorious dainty shade of pink rose on it and I thought I will try a rose again! I potted it cuz I didn't have the time to dig a hole in our hard crazy AZ ground but, do I really need to place it in the ground or do pots work? I want the best for this little gem, this outcast, I found, sooo let me know what you think when you can. Also, what else do you do, I mean like feed your lovelies.
I sooo get your mentioning the anguish of, to cut off the flower or to leave it. You made me grin again having those some thoughts!!! Ahh, the life of a plant lover!!!
This year is the oddest for celebrating of any kind. My kiddos are coming and going with schedules of their own. Plans are now a thing of the past and I just have to adjust and let it be and try to enjoy any time I get to share with them! Headed to pick up my middle missy from ASU today and happy to do so. I just keep Swimming! 😉
Enjoy your outings Vanessa!!! Easter Blessings upon you and your boys!!!<3
Simply beautiful spring pictures. Thank you
You truly live in an enchanted place, Vanessa, and you certainly capture it beautifully in your photos. I could almost smell the scent of the roses! I hope you’re having a wonderful Easter…
Victoria
Oh, I forgot to say, I’m certain those sparkles are fairies!
That is pure magic!
Miss Kelly, I am not sure if they will thrive in pots? I have not ever grown a full rose bush in a pot. However my sister had a very skinny looking miniature rose bush in a pot that I pruned and watered for her, and it turned into a beautiful full rose bush. So, perhaps it can be done??? Let me know how it works <3 <3 <3
Thank you Victoria, I had a great Easter, lots of visitors and long days but grand too <3 Hope yours was lovely as well!
Oh no horrid vertigo. I hate it so. Huge hug!! xoxo
roses are so glorious…especially the climbing variety. I had them for years but the don’t do well here. Too wet. Which makes me so sad. I actually cried when I pulled some out a couple years ago. My favorite are the ballerina and fairy roses….small and pink……
