1903 + Random Things

In the sunflower garden with granny…

Findings 3

Isn't that just wonderful?

Something I picked up on my antiqueventure with little brother.

This is a bit of a tester post.

Something weird happened to my phone line and it got crossed with other lines.

So, all sorts of weirdness is going on which is now also affecting my internet.

Therefore, I have not been able to post for a couple of days.

Hope this one holds, eeeks!

Findings 2

The shasta daisies are turning up in the same place they do year after year.

Even a couple cosmos are peeking in.

It is sooooo hot.

I am not complaining, just saying.

I don't know how the hydrangeas are surviving.

Although they do get wilty if I don't give them a drink twice a day.

Findings 1

So, I got a few treasures the other day.

Some I am saving for MTP.

However, I did pick up a baggie of photos for 5 bucks.

Findings 9

It makes me so sad to see photos discarded, so I try to save them all the time.

These are just wonderful.

Findings 4

I can tell they are mostly from the same family, as there are recurring people.

Many of the photos say 1903 on the back.

Findings 5

Do some people just not value family photos?

I know sometimes they get lost in twists of life and such.

But, I guess also, there are people who don't care to hold on to such things?

Findings 6

Henrietta.

One of my most favorite names.

Maybe I should name this horned toad Henrietta?

Findings 11

We have a little family that has lived in our garden for years.

I love seeing the tiny babies scurry around.

But this one here is a biggie.

Findings 12

They shoot blood out of their eyes when they are being attacked or feeling defensive.

Cool eh?

(by the by, I just got a call from my good friend Dick, who told me that actually, they don't shoot the blood out of their eyes, but from a duct between their eyes on their forehead.  Also, he said that for 50 years he has loved on horned toad lizards and never been shot with the blood.  He said you can put them to sleep by petting them gently from head to back.  But Miles got shot with blood when he was a pup who tried to catch one.  So maybe they only do it when they are really feeling attacked?  So, there you go, some more horned lizard trivia ;)  Thank you for the tips Dick!  Oh and please don't play with lizards unless you know for sure they are harmless, k?)

Findings 13

The skies have been beyond.

Just beyond.

Findings 14

Don't you just marvel at the happenings of the sky?

It never ceases to amaze me.

As cliche' as that sounds.

See the big forearm and hand reaching through the clouds below?

Findings 15

Well, dad's day is around the corner.

Sometimes I feel like we are the last species to figure out that it's super fab for dads to care for their kids and handle duties thought only for moms.

Waaay up in the big pecan tree, by the gigantic flowering yucca, all sorts of dad and kid stuff goes on every day.

Cardinal dad feeds baby 4

Spy them there?

Cardinal dad feeds baby 2

Baby cardinals have been born in the tree.

And guess who they rely on?

Vintagey 13

Yep…

It's dad, dad who brings them food.

Good ole dad!!!

Dads are lovely.

Cardinal dad feeds baby 1

Feed me, feed me!

Isn't it hard to figure out what to do for dads?

It's like, there are only so many socks you can give a man, ya know?

Oh, here is something random.

One of my fave times of the day is when I sit down for a few minutes to enjoy fresh squeezed orange juice and book pages.

Findings 10

Fresh orange juice makes me feel soooo good.

Especially if I am feeling a little tired, it just picks me right up.

I highly recommend it.

We buy lots of oranges every week, yumm.

The veggie garden is growing and I am weeding and thinning a whoooole lot.

Munching as I go.

Findings 7

Well, here goes nothing….

Findings 8

Let's hope I can post this.

And I also hope to one day be able to use my house phone again.

Hearing other people's conversations and massive crackling is wild.

When Mister tries to call me from town/work/grocery shopping, the phone says, please enter code.

As though I have a voice mail box or something?

And when I try to answer a call, it keeps ringing in this sinister ring.

Weeeeirdness!!

All 1st world problems of course, but I find it sort of amusing too.

Too bad I am not hearing any curious conversations on my crossed line.

Haha!

Has that ever happened to you?

Heard anything interesting on crossed phone lines?

Well, they will try to fix it for the 3rd time tomorrow.

So hopefully I will be back very sooooon!!

Looove, V

Sparkly heart

I love old photos too. I think sometimes people just lose them and some people just don’t care. But then there are the families that die out, y’know? Like I have this huge box of old photos that belonged to my grandparents and another box that was my great aunt and uncle’s on the other side of the family. We have such a small family and there won’t be any future generations, so what will happen to those photos? It makes me sad thinking about that.
I’m going to go look at those beautiful flowers again. That should cheer me up! Have a great day!
    love & blessings

ps…hugs & kisses to Matty and Miles (& Douglas if he is still there!) 🙂

  2. Betty says:

YAY! I am glad this post worked for you, Dear Miss Vanessa!! That is SO weird about your phone line!!! I don’t usually wish this on anyone, but I do wish my ex-boyfriend was there to check on your phone lines for you! He was the source of all kinds of craziness, but he was good at his job, which was troubleshooting for a telecommunications company! Anyway……..! I can’t wait to see what else you got on your antiquing trip! Oh! Hurry up Mad Tea Party!!!
Wishing you best of luck in your phone repairs!
    Betty

  3. That is weird, Vanessa! I have had that happen to me in the past. My phone would ring and I would hear other people talking, but they couldn’t hear me! Insert Twilight Zone theme song here. : ) Can’t wait to see what you got and are keeping for the tea party. It is sad about the pictures. I feel that way about needle work items I see at the thrift stores.

  4. Laura Tieri says:

I was going to say what the Laura before me said. When you have a small family, there’s nobody left to carry on the memories.
My husband has family but they’re not going to care about my stuff from the past.
That toad is so cool. He just blends right in with the ground!
My veggies are starting to come up! It’s so exciting! I need to go out & weed but it’s been way too humid out there.
It was only in the 60s this morning, but miserable! We’ve actually had a lot of non-humid days this year. :0)
We used to have phone problems when it rained. I would hear my neighbor talking when I picked my phone up. I would get calls that would ring on her phone next door. The phone company used to have to come out every time it rained. They finally fixed it permanently! We used to have a party line in the old days of our lake house. You would pick up the phone to make a call & you would hear another conversation going on. You had to wait until they were done. I never listened in on them but I’ll bet a lot of people did!

  5. Victoria says:

Same kind of phone weirdness going on here in the Southern California mountains! It happened day before yesterday, I got major goose bumps when I read it was happing to you, too! So far, knock on wood, my internet hasn’t been affected, just the phones. It seems to have resolved itself, I hope yours does too.
I love those sunset cloud photos, too gorgeous. The old photos make me sad. Who are those people? What were their stories? Where are their descendants, and why didn’t they care about the photos?
I’m going to write, right now, all the names of the people in my old photos on the back of the photos so if they ever end up in a similar predicament at least people will know who they were!
    Blessings,
    Victoria

  6. Party line fun!! hahahahaa!!! Yep come to think of it, who ever would
I leave all my stuff to? There is no one. Ill end up in a bin at
    the thrift store, hahaha!

  7. Victoria, spooky phone weirdness!! 😉 Yes yes,
that is brilliant. I think its important to have the names and maybe the
location too? And perhaps the date if possible or even justthe
year.I agree, I should do this as well….Good
    idea!

  8. Kelly says:

Ahhh Miss V, you have the cardinals and such fantastic photos too!!!<3
You are living in such a wonderful magical place! You have horny toads too and there babies running about as well. I haven't seen the horny toads in years! What I mean, since I was a kid in CA. when we belonged to a dune buggy club and we went camping and I brought one home for a pet. I have a picture of the two of us together and i was probably 5. We would have to buy meal worms to feed it. I also remember crying when it died. Oh yes did!
There is just something that makes me wish these old photos could tell us there story. Mainly, because the people usually aren't smiling. The thought that our pics may be found in a antique shop someday! Yup, in this day and age we've got lots of them too! Yikes!!!!

  9. Aiiiieeee-yaaaay! You have “Horned Toads”, what we affectionately call “Horny Toads”. I used to have them all over my family farm. My brothers and I would catch them and release them in a few hours, once the fondness wore off. Such cool creatures.
Side note: We have a plethora of Blue Jays, Mockingbirds, and Cardinals in our yard. Although sadly, less Cardinals than I would prefer. I need to find out what seed and treats they like, so I can stock-up on that to attract more families.

  10. I kinda think it’s entertaining in a way, cross lines that is.Hoping all is well with the both of You,say Hi to Your honey 🙂

  11. Janet Ghio says:

What a wonderful post-so much fun to read and look at-stream of thoughts-just great!

  12. Miss Linda says:

I love all of your photos from bygone days. After having to clean out homes from parents that have past away I ran across many unusual photos myself. They are so much fun to look at and with many of them I would love to learn about the people in them.
About the strange happenings with the phone, this week with Friday the 13th, full huge moon and all the solar flares, it is no wonder that we all are having trouble with phones (land lines as well as cell phones.) That is what I was told. The craziness should end soon.
    Wonderful post.

  13. DogsMom says:

I love how you see the beautiful in every day.
I am old enough to remember “party” telephone lines. And yes, some of the things we heard! Without trying, of course.
I had to laugh as there are categories of things I feel I must “rescue” from thrift stores.
I wonder what will happen to family photos in these times of digital images. When our eldest are gone, will those images just be deleted?
Decades of history gone with the push of a button.

  14. Annalee says:

I think that Henrietta is a perfect name for that lovely horned toad. ^__^
And I love old photos too… I also can’t imagine anyone ever voluntarily parting with their photos… it seems so strange to me. I would love to have copies (even more love the originals…) of my family photos. My mom sent me some copies she found a few years ago, and I was simply over the moon. I think that some people don’t like to remember where they came from perhaps… only want to look forward to where they’re wanting to go. So much history is lost all the time.
I think I have extra interest in my family history because my paternal great grandmother wasn’t allowed to marry my paternal great grandfather because he wasn’t Dutch, but she was already pregnant (so scandalous! ^_~)… so all I know about him is his name. Someday when I’m able to, I’m going to see if I can hunt down any info about him. ^_^ Anyways… I love that those old photos have a loving home with you now. ^_^ I hope your weekend has been lovely!
    XOXO

  15. Jenn says:

Ohhhh how weird about your phone. I have never heard anything on crossed phone lines, but as we live about a mile from the mine, we can hear all their conversations that are transmitted over radio. It is very strange, as though they’re carried on the wind or something! You can hear them clear as day as though they’re in the room next to yours.
And how sad that people would want to get rid of old family photos! I truly do not understand that. I know you will cherish their memories though, you have that kind of soul!
