Doing Day 1 {Doodling}

Remember how we were talking the other day about, not just looking, but doing?

About, how hard it is to get started sometimes?

How, often, we don't even know where to start?

Sometimes, when I am looking at decor magazines or garden photos, I feel a desire in me to go out and do.  I jump out of my chair, and think, okay today I am doing.  Doing something big, something magical, something wonderful, something huge.

I get a rush of gusto.

And then, every so often, that gusto fades after a few minutes.

Draw doodle 1

I think we all go through that.

We find ourselves wanting to be creative, but, where to begin?

The thing about creating is that, all you need is a little spark to ignite the flame.

And then, after a little while, you have a roaring fire.

So, I was thinking about my ignition.

What I do to get my embers burning.

Then I was wondering if maybe, you'd like to try something with me?

Draw doodle 3

Something called doodling.

You know what doodling is.

You did it in class as a kid.

You do it while on hold on the phone.

While taking a course.

Drawing aimlessly, for no reason.

Not sketching with thought.

Not anything that requires any concentration or skill.

Just random little drawings and twists and turns with a pen, that mean nothing.

Draw doodle 5

You don't need a fancy pen.

You don't need an eraser.

I personally like a black fine tip ball point pen.

Draw doodle 7

So here's the deal.

Why don't we take a couple pages of plain old paper, or card stock, or any ole thing you want, and doodle together?

Over a few days?

And build on it slowly?

Will you join me?

Draw doodle 2

The thing about doodling is, you don't have to have any skills in drawing whatsoever.

You just need a cozy space to sit, and a flowing stream of consciousness.

Where you just let your mind get really calm, and then, you let your hand loose.

Draw doodle 6

Maybe have a cup of tea?

Some dessert?

I love to doodle before I sleep.

I keep my clip board filled with some pieces of card stock, right on my night table.

Draw doodle 4

The thing is, it's crucial to make this enjoyable.

Not to make yourself feel that you have to draw something good.

The whole point is to just make random little drawings.

I start with a pointless swirl of the pen…

Draw doodle 8

I get in my childlike mindset, and I just draw.

I insert little messages to myself.

And I just loop around and around, this and that.

A face here, a heart there.

Simple happy little doodles.

Draw doodle 9

The thing is, it's while you are doodling that your mind has a chance to relax.

And, it is in those moments of relaxation, that creativity grows.

That you get more ideas.

That you start to focus on what you would like to do.

It's like, doodles encourage you.

Without you even knowing it.

Draw doodle 11

So, here's the thing.

I would love if you would doodle with me for a couple of nights.

Or whenever you have free time.

Then over a few days, we could add some things to our doodles.

We can sew them together.

We can add paint.

Maybe, maybe not.

Whatever we want.

But, let's do it.

Let's doodle.

Draw doodle 12

It's a tiny step that leads to bigger doing.

Doing something that releases.

Something that feels good.

Relaxing.

Something that takes no pressure.

Something fun.

Draw doodle 13

Draw doodle 14

Doodle away…

Draw doodle 10

I never sleep better than on nights that I doodle.

It's therapeutic and meditative for me.

If you already doodle you know what I mean.

But, now, carve out a few minutes for it.

Won't you?

My doodling inspired me to dig out a huge trunk with some of my childhood friends.

Draw doodle 15

Something I wanted to do for a long time.

Then I was inspired to start a new painting from one of my doodles.

It's so relaxing, and it's a first step.

Especially when you don't know where to begin.

It is a first step for me.

And I think it might work for you too.

Doodling leads to doing.

Trust me.

So, let's doodle a couple days, and then, let's see where that takes us, okay?

Say yes, please?

Love, Vanessa

Sparkly heart

ps:

For several days it has been sunny and warm.

Spring for sure.

Daffodils bloomed.

Snow 6

And so did the Hyacinth.

Snow 7

I took these photos above this morning.

Miles wanted to cuddle while I was taking pictures, on my knees.

Snow 4

Lovee said a snow storm was coming in.

My response…

I don't believe it.

It never snows during the middle of the day here.

Only at night, and melts by late morning.

Then, like clock work…

Snow 3

It started to snow.

And within 1 hour, it looked like this.

Snow 2

Now it looks more than this…

Snow 1

It has not stopped snowing for hours.

I took these photos a couple of hours ago…

Snow 5

And it is still snowing.

I am so excited I can't wait to go out there.

Miles saw the snow, and already went and threw his body in it, and rolled around.

I have never seen him as excited as when he sees snow.

Wait, strike that, when he sees me getting dressed to go somewhere, he gets excited too (as does Matty).  He thinks that it means cheeseburgers.

Me getting dressed + car = cheeseburgers

🙂

Sounds like fun and since I don’t have a lot time til March it will definitely fit the bill. Where could we share our doodles with you?

  2. Tiff says:

Doodling has always been something that helps me keep my sanity as well as something to enjoy with my 2 owlets. A wonderfully thoughtless yet productive pastime.
We had a bit of snow here in NC this passed weekend! Didn’t stick all that well, but it was gorgeous to see while it was falling.

  3. Kelly says:

Hooray!!!I knew you would post snow shots!!! My Sis-in-law in Morena AZ called and said it was snowing your way. She doesn’t have a good camera so I was waiting to see your pics Vanessa! Wow, I’m jealous!!!! I doubt we will get any here in Phoenix, but U never know! It did snow here about 10 years ago, not sure exactly, but it did once.
My family in CA are all getting the white stuff too!!!Yikes!
Love your comment about the getting dressed + car = cheeseburgers!!! We LOVE our Furries 😉

  4. The DoodleRumble is ON!!!!!

  5. Yay! I love to doodle! I do it all the time. Sometimes with pencil and sometimes with watercolors. Your doodles are fantastic.
When my kids were little, I’d give each one of them a piece of paper with a “starter doodle” that I drew and then they’d finish the doodle. They also played that game together without me. Soooo fun to see what their little open minds would come up with.
    I am a doodleholic!
I heard it was snowing in your neck of the woods. How lovely. It rained here last night and we had precisely 2 blasts of lightning and that was all.

Ok, I’ve never been much of a doodler but…
    I think I’ll start tomorrow.
    <3

  10. Maryann says:

I’m in. Heck yeah, bedtime doodling. Maybe it will help me sleep. 🙂

  11. Misha/DawaiOser says:

Wow…even your doodles are mad-creative and beautiful.
Your last sentence about the dog and the cheeseburger – made me laugh and I’m still smiling thinking about it. LOL.

  12. phyllis says:

I saw on t.v. that you guys got snow, so I came over to see your pics!!
You got more than we have this year (none).
Sunday in church (shhh!!!) I doodled…I sat with a ton of kids and
drew POLLILOPS with ribbons and they loved it.

  13. Eve says:

Doodling is very important. It gets out those ideas that need to come out and then there are the other kind that surprise you because you have no idea where they came from! I love stumbling upon my old doodles. They usually spark something in me, that spark makes the “doing” happen.
    p.s. I looooove snow.

  14. Lovin your doodles Ms. V!!
    Jamie 🙂

  15. Hahahahah that is so sweet…cheeseburgers, aaawwwwww. And the snow = yay for you, it’s beatiful!!!
    Jamie 🙂

  17. Jenn says:

Yep the gusto then the poof of the gusto, hehe I get you!!! I am having a stay in bed day today, catching up. I find I’d love to be creative but there’s much to do before I can justify relaxing and sitting down to some paint. I guess I need to realize that there’s ALWAYS going to be things to do. Time to relax and splash around some colours!

  18. Alia says:

Wasn’t the snow the greatest? We even got it at my house which I feel like usually doesn’t get snow when yours does. I was home sick from work yesterday, but it was coincidentally a good day to be home as I got to stay all cozy inside and watch the weather and drink tea all day. It is funny that even though I was home in Oregon for Christmas where there was plenty of snow, I get so excited when it snows here just because it is so unusual. It was lovely!

  19. Magickwyrds says:

Lol- our storm went and visited you! Awesome idea, doodling… must try that soon! Thank you for sharing your thoughts today 🙂

  20. Miss Linda says:

I love doodling…I do it all the time. I will send you some of mine with the backgrounds I made. Yours are awesome. Love all the photos. Sure wish spring would make the scene here.
    Thanks for sharing.

  21. Melanie says:

Ahh….snow!! Everyone must have snow at least once a winter. So cozy.
Your doodles are awesome, but we wouldn’t expect anything less. I have to allow
myself the time to doodle. It’s a happy thing.

  22. M says:

Doodling is so healing. At the beginning of the year I started a new project which I call Jazz Art Play. Everyday I put on some jazz music for 15 minutes and doodle away. So far, I have done it everyday and it’s working wonders for my inspiration levels. Great ideas are born in these tiny doodle sessions.
I love your doodles. They make me feel happy and hopeful.
Thanks for this great post. Stay warm and toasty!

  23. jennifer says:

I’ll join in too! 🙂 I haven’t purposely doodled in a long time…so I will dig out that sketch pad, put it by my bed, make some tea tonight…or a glass of wine…and doodle. I will.
    Good idea you had!

  24. Marilyn says:

Smiling at the thought of you getting dressed equals cheeseburgers.
I am coming late to the party, but I would love to doodle. I haven’t done much doodling for a very long time.

  25. Marilyn, you are not late, and I am so glad you joined in!!! 😉

your right i had forgotten about doodling I use to do it all the time when a kid and as i saw my young son pull out this paper and pen on the car journey home from school … it made me sad that i had let this fun pastime go…… so starting to day I going to sit down with pen and paper and see what happens hugs wendy

  27. Jenny Mulvey says:

Have you heard of zentangles.. It’s a way of meditative purposeful doodling. I teach it to my older students. They love it! Zentangles are all the rage right now. Check them out on line. It’s fun and builds drawing confidence.

  28. Jenny, never heard of it, but cant wait to google it 😉

  29. Heather W. says:

Oh yes, I’ve been doodling, well, since forever…..it helped me through my teen years. Just this year, I started doodling in bed to end my day…so relaxing! I, too, would love to have a space for those of us who would like to share. Blessings ~H🖤~

  30. Theresa says:

Your doodles are fabulous! You are inspiring me to do it, too! 🙂 So lovely to see spring flowers…I have spied crocuses trying to make their way from the earth. Believe it or not, we STILL have snow on the ground from our blizzard. Even with warmer temps and rain, it lingers still. I am learning to see some pretty flowers!

  31. Rachel says:

Ooo yes, I’ll join in with the doodling. I doodle quite a bit on my notebook at work, mainly eyes, which makes my notebook look a bit freaky. I’ve never purposley sat down to doodle though. It’s a fab idea!

  32. Rachel says:

    Whoops! Purposely! 😉

  33. Logan says:

I love to doodle. I think it’s cool to give us a challenge together. I like this song to get the flames burning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Vk-LMrdNHY
